The Drive
Short, simple, and easy to get wrong at rush hour
E-470 north to I-25, then west on CO 119 into town. That is the line nine times out of ten and it is the shortest airport transfer we run in Northern Colorado. The alternative through the metro on I-270 and US 36 exists, but it trades a toll for a traffic jam and usually loses.
The complication is CO 119, the Diagonal, which carries commuters between Longmont and Boulder and backs up in both peaks. If your address is on the west side of town, that stretch is the difference between a fifty-minute ride and an hour and fifteen.
How much time to add. Clear, off-peak: about fifty minutes. Weekday morning or evening: add twenty. Winter with wind on the open I-25 stretch north of Denver: add twenty and expect us to move the pickup earlier rather than drive it faster.

A colony town from Chicago that grew into the valley's working centre
Longmont was organised in Chicago, not Colorado. In late 1870 a group of Chicago men formed the Chicago-Colorado Colony, sold memberships, and the following March about 250 colonists arrived by train to Erie and then by wagon to a patch of the St. Vrain Valley. They named the place for the mountain on the skyline, Longs Peak, and laid out a grid that is still the shape of downtown.

The new-urbanist neighbourhood on the south side, brightly painted and walkable, with its own small commercial core.

Longmont's downtown is one of the more underrated evenings on the Front Range: a genuinely wide main street with brick buildings, a mural programme, and a brewery scene that predates most of the state's. Left Hand has been brewing here since 1993 and was named national brewery of the year in 2022; Oskar Blues built here too.
It is walkable end to end, which is why a good share of our local work is a simple two-stop evening: drop at one end of Main, collect at the other three hours later. Nobody argues about who is driving.
The 2013 flood is why the creek looks like that
In September 2013 the St. Vrain came out of its banks and cut through the middle of Longmont, wrecking the greenway, the bridges and a good part of the industrial east side. The response was the Resilient St. Vrain project, a multi-year rebuild of the channel and the trail system that is still working its way downstream.
The result is a creek corridor that is both prettier and considerably safer than the one that flooded, and a city that takes water seriously. If you are here in the spring and the runoff is big, that work is the reason nobody is nervous.
The weather, told straight
Longmont sits on the plains at about 5,000 feet with the foothills close enough to shape everything. Upslope storms park against the range and dump snow here while the airport stays clear. Downslope wind events do the opposite, blowing warm and hard enough to strip the snow off the ground in a day.
For a traveller the practical rule is the same one that applies all along this corridor: check the road, not the sky. We do that from CDOT cameras before the car leaves, which is a duller answer than most people expect and a more useful one.
