The Drive
The short way is a two-lane highway, not an interstate
There are two lines. US 85 north through Brighton and Platteville is the direct one, and it is largely a divided highway through open farm country with signals, turning traffic and slow-moving equipment. E-470 to I-25 and then east on US 34 is longer on the map and often faster in the afternoon.
We pick between them on the day. US 85 carries a lot of oil-field traffic, and a single truck turning into a well pad access road can hold up a mile of vehicles. It is also a corridor with a poor safety record, which is a reason to be in the hands of someone who drives it weekly rather than someone following a phone.
How much time to add. Clear conditions, an hour and a quarter door to door. Weekday afternoon on 85, add twenty minutes. Winter, add whatever the wind is doing, because these are open fields with nothing to stop drifting snow.
Fog is the underrated one. Irrigated ground plus a cold, still morning puts dense radiation fog over the South Platte bottoms, and it can drop visibility to a few car lengths on 85 while Denver is clear. That is a reason to leave earlier, not to drive faster.

Greeley began in 1870 as the Union Colony, a planned settlement organised by Nathan Meeker of the New York Tribune and backed by his editor Horace Greeley, who had told the country to go west. About 480 colonists bought in, each required to arrive with enough money to last a year, and they built a town on irrigation, temperance and hard work at the junction of the Cache la Poudre and the South Platte. The temperance part lasted until 1969. The irrigation is still running.
The old colony grid, restored brick blocks around the county courthouse, and a growing food scene along 8th and 9th.
Founded in 1889 as the State Normal School, still the state's principal producer of teachers, about 10,000 students.

The Greeley Stampede started in 1922 as a one-day potato day with about 2,500 people.
