Colorado's longest continuously operated ski resort, a valley with two towns, and the only ski area in the state with a passenger train to the base.
Winter Park has been running lifts longer than any resort in Colorado, and for most of that time it was Denver's mountain rather than a destination. It still feels that way in the best sense: less polish, more skiing, and a valley with two actual towns in it. The resort sits at the top, the town of Winter Park spreads along US-40 below it, and Fraser is two miles further north. Nobody has built a fake Tyrolean plaza here, which some visitors notice as an absence and locals count as the point.
Where to stay, and the trade each way
At the base, ski-in ski-out, with the gondola and the ski school at the door. The right call with children or with a group that does not want to think about transport at 8 a.m.
A mile and a half down US-40, where most of the restaurants, bars and shops are. Cheaper beds, a real town, and a short shuttle or drive to the lifts. Best for a group whose evenings matter.
Two miles further, more residential, more space per dollar, and the address on a lot of the larger rental houses. Quiet in a way people either love or find dull.
Fifteen minutes out toward Granby: a nordic and spa property rather than a ski hotel, with 100-plus kilometers of groomed cross-country trail. Books separately from the ski trip and worth it.
Seven territories, and where you should actually be
The front side. Groomed blues, the ski school, and the mountain a mixed family should stay on for the first two days.
Fifty years old in the 2025-26 season and unrepentant about it. Bumps, trees, no snowmaking on much of it, and the reason Front Range skiers are loyal here. "No pain, no Jane" is a locals' bumper sticker, not marketing copy.
Hike-to and traverse-to alpine terrain above the trees, and some of the most serious in-bounds skiing on this side of the Divide. Conditions dependent, wind dependent, and not a casual afternoon.
The lift that takes you to about 12,060 feet, one of the highest six-person chairlifts in North America, and the access point for the high alpine. Also the fastest way to find out how you handle altitude.
Terrain here skews hard: the resort's own breakdown is 52 percent most difficult and only 8 percent beginner. Beginners are well served on the front side, but a group of intermediates will feel the mountain pushing back sooner than at Keystone or Breckenridge.
The ski train, and why it matters to your booking
The Amtrak Winter Park Express runs from Denver Union Station directly to the resort base on winter weekends, roughly a two-and-a-half-hour ride, and it is the only Colorado ski area with that arrangement. It is a genuinely good option and it creates a specific problem: it runs on a fixed schedule with one departure each way, so a delayed flight into DEN or a late finish on the hill leaves you stranded. A large share of what we do in this valley is filling that gap — the group takes the train up and rides home with us, or vice versa.
Berthoud Pass, and why this drive is different
Winter Park is not on I-70. The route is US-40 over Berthoud Pass at 11,307 feet: no tunnel, no divided highway, twenty switchbacks and a 6 percent grade on both sides. In good weather it is one of the best drives in the state. In a storm it is the reason people book a chauffeur instead of driving themselves, and it is the one mountain approach where we most often move a pickup time rather than argue with the forecast.
Summer in the Fraser Valley
Lift-served downhill mountain biking with a national reputation, and the reason the base village is busy in July.

Grand Lake and the Trail Ridge Road west entrance are about forty minutes north — the quiet half of the park, without the Estes Park crowds.
Paved, mostly flat, and connects the town to the resort base. The right ride for a group with mixed fitness.
What to tell dispatch
Tell us whether your address is at the base, in town, or in Fraser — they are up to four miles apart along a single highway, and "Winter Park" alone is not enough to plan a winter pickup. If you are combining with the train, give us the train time rather than your ideal time. And if you are flying in the same day you plan to ski, know that the base sits at 9,000 feet and Panoramic tops out above 12,000; the altitude is not theoretical here.

Base village if you want to walk to the lifts and do not care about restaurants. Downtown Winter Park if you want to walk to dinner. Fraser if you want space and a lower rate and do not mind driving. They sit along four miles of US-40 and each is a different pickup.
Harder than its neighbors. The resort's own terrain breakdown is 52 percent most difficult, with Mary Jane's bumps and the Cirque's alpine terrain making up much of the acreage. The front side has good groomed blue skiing, but there is less of it than at Breckenridge or Keystone.
It is a good ride and a fair price, but there is one departure each way per day. Most of our Winter Park work is covering the other half of that trip — train up, private ride home, or a private ride up when the flight lands too late for the morning train.
It is a two-lane mountain highway over 11,307 feet with switchbacks and no tunnel, and it demands respect and the right vehicle. Our chauffeurs run it all season in AWD and 4WD that meets Colorado's traction law, and dispatch watches CDOT before every departure. It is also why we would rather shift a pickup by an hour than push into an active storm cycle.
Winter Park's second mountain, opened in 1975, known for moguls, tree lines and minimal grooming. It turned fifty in the 2025-26 season. If someone in your group talks about "the Jane," this is what they mean, and they are probably a Front Range local.
Trestle Bike Park is a serious lift-served bike park, Hideaway Park runs free concerts in town, and the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is about forty minutes north at Grand Lake. Summer rates are a fraction of ski season.
