The Drive
Two routes, and only one of them exists in winter
Aspen sits behind Independence Pass, which closes to all traffic from roughly early November until late May each year. When it is open, the pass is the short line from the east but it is narrow, unlit, and posted against vehicles over 35 feet. For most of the ski season the only ground route is I-70 west to Glenwood Springs, then Highway 82 southeast through Carbondale and Basalt into Aspen.
Glenwood Canyon is the pinch point on that route. It has no shoulder for most of its length, and after the 2020 Grizzly Creek burn scar the canyon closes for debris flows during heavy summer rain as well as winter storms. When it closes, the detour is genuinely long, over Cottonwood Pass or north through Steamboat, and it can add three hours or more. An operator who runs this corridor regularly checks the canyon status before dispatching, not after.
When flying into Aspen makes more sense than driving
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport sits four miles from downtown, and if your flight actually lands there the ground leg is fifteen minutes. The catch is that ASE has one of the highest weather-diversion rates of any commercial airport in the country. Diverted flights typically land in Grand Junction, Denver, or Rifle. If that happens, you need a ground plan that already exists. We hold the reservation and move it to the new arrival rather than cancelling, which is the difference between a four-hour drive you booked and a four-hour drive you are trying to arrange from a gate.
Getting to Snowmass, Basalt and Woody Creek
Snowmass Village is a further 20-minute climb off Highway 82 at Brush Creek Road, and the last stretch to Divide or Two Creeks is steep enough that a compliant vehicle matters even on a clear day. Basalt and Carbondale are on the way in, so a stop for groceries or a rental-shop pickup usually costs less time than you would expect. Tell dispatch about intermediate stops when you book; they change vehicle choice more often than they change the route.
The Destination, By The People Who Drive It
Four mountains, one town, and a road that changes with the calendar
Aspen sells itself as one place and skis as four. Aspen Mountain rises straight out of town with no beginner terrain at all, Aspen Highlands is the locals' mountain and the one with the bootpack, Buttermilk is where people learn, and Snowmass is the big one twelve miles down valley with the longest run in the state at about eight and a half miles. One lift ticket covers all four and a free skier shuttle connects them, which is why where you sleep matters less here than it does anywhere else in Colorado.
No green runs, a gondola out of the middle of town, and lift lines that thin out after 10 a.m. The mountain for people who already ski.
Highland Bowl is the reason people come: a bootpack along a ridge to 12,392 feet, then one long open pitch back down. Not a first-morning objective.
Gentle, sunny and forgiving, and the X Games venue every January. The two facts are less contradictory than they sound.
Four thousand feet of vertical and terrain for every level in one place. If the group is mixed, stay here and ride the shuttle into Aspen for dinner.

If we got one run, it would be the Big Burn into Fanny Hill
Snowmass's Big Burn is a wide, spaced-out face where nothing is trying to hurt you and you can look up while you ski. The name is the history: the trees were cleared by a fire long before there was a lift, and the story told in the valley is that the Utes set it, in the years around their removal from this side of the divide in 1881.
It is a long way down and it links straight into Fanny Hill, which finishes at Snowmass Base Village. That is the whole run a mixed group can share — the confident skier can drop into the steeper lines off the side of the Burn and rejoin, and everyone still ends at the same table with a hot chocolate. The trophy day is Highland Bowl, and it is not this run: that one is a forty-five minute hike and a serious face, best done early and with someone who has done it before.

The weather, told straight
Aspen town averages about 170 inches of snow a year, and February is the snowiest month at roughly 28 inches. The resort figures you see quoted are higher because they are measured up high; the town number is the one that matters for your drive in.
The bigger seasonal fact is the road. Independence Pass, the direct line over the Divide at 12,095 feet, closes every winter around the first week of November and reopens the Thursday before Memorial Day. From November to May there is exactly one road in: I-70 to Glenwood Springs, then Highway 82 up the valley. That is why a winter Aspen transfer runs four hours and a summer one can run three and a half.
Why the town looks like that
Silver built Aspen. The strikes came in 1879, and by 1893 the town had around 13,000 people, two railroads, its own opera house and was producing a sixth of the silver in the United States. Then Congress repealed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, the price collapsed, and Aspen spent fifty years as a near-ghost town of a few hundred residents. Those are the “quiet years,” and they are the reason the Victorian brick downtown survived: nobody had the money to tear it down.
In 1946 Walter Paepcke, Friedl Pfeifer, Johnny Litchfield and Percy Rideout founded the Aspen Skiing Company and opened what was then the longest chairlift in the world. Paepcke's ambition was never only skiing — the 1949 Goethe convocation and the world championships that followed in 1950 set up the town's odd double life as a ski resort that also runs an ideas festival. Is it safe to drive into the mountains in winter?
With the right vehicle and a trained chauffeur, yes. Colorado's Traction Law (Code 15) on I-70 requires AWD/4WD or snow-rated tires with adequate tread; Arion vehicles meet or exceed it, carry chains, and our chauffeurs are ice-driving trained and monitor CDOT conditions before and during every mountain run.
What happens if I-70 closes or chain law is in effect?
Dispatch monitors CDOT closures and traction/chain restrictions in real time and will reroute (US-285, US-40, I-70 timing changes) or reschedule your pickup window. We tell you early rather than leaving you guessing at the airport.
How much extra time should I plan for ski-day traffic?
Plan an extra 60–90 minutes for Friday and Saturday westbound mornings and Sunday afternoon eastbound returns, and more around holiday weekends and storm cycles. We shift departure times to travel ahead of the peak rather than sitting in it.
Where do our skis and boards go?
On the roof. We run open racks and covered boxes, so skis, boards and any bags beyond what fits comfortably inside ride up top rather than across your lap. Tell us the gear count when you book and we will send the right vehicle.
How many passengers fit in an SUV in winter?
From November 1 through April 30 we cap the Luxury SUV at five passengers instead of six. That is deliberate: five people plus roughly seven or eight pieces of luggage fits comfortably, six people plus ski gear does not. The Executive SUV seats five year round.
What happens if there is a storm on the way to the mountains?
The trip still runs. What changes is the route. Closures and chain law are checked before we leave, and your chauffeur adjusts en route and tells you what changed and why. Winter trips also carry about an extra hour of buffer, because the drive is slower before it is dangerous.
How much luggage fits?
An Executive SUV holds 8 standard bags or 4 ski sets, and a Luxury SUV holds 5 bags because the captain's chairs take up cargo room. Our vans hold 14 bags or 6 ski sets, and a Luxury Sedan holds 3 bags. If you are travelling with skis, boards, golf clubs or oversized gear, tell us at booking and we will size the vehicle to the pile, not the headcount.
Will my chauffeur meet me inside at the airport?
At Denver International, curbside pickup on Level 5 is standard. Your chauffeur texts you the exact door before you land and is waiting when you walk out. If you would rather be met inside at baggage claim with a name sign, that is available for an additional $75, arranged at booking. At Eagle County and Aspen, the inside meet is standard: your chauffeur meets you in the terminal and walks you to the vehicle.
