The Pikes Peak region centers on Colorado Springs, the state's second-largest city, and radiates outward from the 14,115-foot peak that inspired 'America the Beautiful.' Garden of the Gods draws over two million visitors a year. The Broadmoor has anchored the luxury hospitality scene since 1918. Manitou Springs — tucked into a canyon at the base of the Incline — is equal parts artsy mountain town and mineral water spa. Farther out, Woodland Park serves as the gateway to Cripple Creek, and Castle Rock and Monument mark the I-25 corridor between Denver and the Springs.
The region is a year-round destination. Summer sees peak tourism at Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak Highway. Winter brings lighter crowds but the Broadmoor's holiday programming draws visitors. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (late June) is the area's signature motorsport event.
Colorado Springs sits 70 miles south of Denver along I-25 — a clean 75-minute drive with no mountain passes, no tunnel bottlenecks, and year-round accessibility. The corridor passes through Castle Rock and Monument, both growing communities with their own dining and lodging scenes. From DIA, the trip runs closer to 90 minutes depending on airport traffic.
The Pikes Peak Highway (now the Pikes Peak–America's Mountain road) climbs to 14,115 feet and requires a reservation in peak season. Vehicles over 35 feet are prohibited, and the descent requires brake-temperature checks at the halfway point. For visitors combining Pikes Peak with Garden of the Gods, the Broadmoor, or the Cog Railway, the day involves multiple stops spread across a 30-mile radius — logistics that favor a dedicated car over a series of rideshare calls.
Garden of the Gods is free to enter but parking fills by 9 AM on summer weekends. The Broadmoor resort offers valet but charges premium rates for non-guests. Downtown Colorado Springs has a growing restaurant and brewery scene — the Ivywild School building alone is worth a visit — but the attractions are spread out enough that walking between them isn't practical.
For Denver-based visitors making a day trip, a private car means you skip the 90-minute return drive after a full day of elevation and sun. The I-25 corridor between Denver and Colorado Springs looks flat on a map, but it climbs over the Palmer Divide at Monument Hill, roughly 7,350 feet and the highest point on the interstate between Wyoming and New Mexico. It catches snow and blowing wind when Denver and the Springs are both dry, and it is the stretch CDOT slows or closes first. Dispatch watches that segment specifically and moves departure times rather than pushing into a closure.
The mountain has its own calendar. The Pikes Peak Highway takes reservations in peak season, prohibits vehicles over 35 feet, and requires a brake-temperature check at Glen Cove on the way down; the upper road closes for storms year-round and stays gated well into spring. Summer thunderstorms build above treeline by early afternoon, so a summit run belongs in the morning. West of Manitou Springs, US-24 through Ute Pass is the only real route to Woodland Park and Cripple Creek, and a single incident up there backs the whole pass up.
Air Force Academy graduation in late May fills every hotel from Monument to the Broadmoor, adds controlled access at the Academy gates and puts a Thunderbirds flyover in the middle of the afternoon. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in late June closes the highway to the public during race week. Broadmoor and Cheyenne Mountain Resort conference season runs spring and fall, when a single group can need airport transfers, course runs and dinner trips into town on the same day.
Colorado Springs Airport is the quiet option worth knowing about: COS is about 20 minutes from downtown and the Broadmoor, against 90 minutes from DEN, and connections through Dallas, Denver or Phoenix often price close.
