The Drive
A straight road with three things that slow it down
I-25 north, and that is most of the story. The complications are specific and predictable: the long-running widening project between Longmont and Loveland, which moves lanes and shoulders by the month; the wind through the open stretch past Berthoud, which is a real factor for high-profile vehicles; and the Harmony Road and Prospect interchanges, which back up at commute hours in a way the highway itself does not.
Winter here is different from the mountains. The problem is not snowfall but ground blizzards: a modest storm plus a thirty-mile-an-hour crosswind turns the open sections into whiteouts with drifts across the travel lanes, while the sun may be out ten miles away. This corridor closes a few times most winters, usually with little warning.
How much time to add. Clear conditions, about an hour and twenty minutes door to door. Weekday morning southbound, add twenty minutes. Ground blizzard, we do not add time, we move the pickup, because sitting on a closed interstate is not a plan.
Early flights are what we mostly do here. A 6 a.m. departure out of DEN usually means a 3:45 to 4:15 pickup in Fort Collins. Our chauffeurs on this run live in Northern Colorado, so nobody is driving up from Denver first, and the car is outside before you are.

The Destination, By The People Who Drive It
An army camp that became a land-grant college town and then a brewery town
Fort Collins started as Camp Collins, a military post on the Cache la Poudre in 1864, put there to watch the Overland Trail. The soldiers left in 1867 and the town nearly went with them. What saved it was the decision in 1870 to site Colorado's land-grant agricultural college here — now Colorado State University, still the largest employer, and the reason this is a college town rather than a farm town that faded.
The brick heart of the city around Old Town Square, restored rather than replaced, and closed to traffic in the middle. Best drop-off is the edge of the square.
A full campus on the west side with its own traffic pattern. Move-in weekend and home games change every route through town.
The tech and medical employers on the south side. Most of our weekday corporate work starts or ends here, not downtown.
The reservoir and the open space along the hogback west of town, fifteen minutes from Old Town and a completely different landscape.

If we got one afternoon, it would be up the Poudre
The Cache la Poudre is the only river in Colorado with a Wild and Scenic designation — 76 miles of it, designated on October 30, 1986 — and the canyon road that follows it starts twenty minutes from Old Town. An hour up that road puts you past the rafting stretches and into granite, pine and water that has not been dammed.
Horsetooth Reservoir is the shorter version: fifteen minutes from town, a ridge road with the whole Front Range laid out behind it, and the best sunset view within city limits. Neither needs a permit, a reservation or a plan.
The weather, told straight
Fort Collins gets roughly three hundred days of sunshine and about fifty-five inches of snow a year, and most of that snow is gone within days. It is a semi-arid climate on the edge of the plains, which produces two extremes worth planning around: the ground blizzards that shut I-25 in winter, and the hail that arrives with the summer thunderstorms coming off the foothills.
The practical version for a traveller: the forecast at your hotel is a poor guide to the corridor between here and the airport. That gap is the whole reason to have a dispatcher watching the road rather than a phone app.
Why there is a brewery on every corner
The water. The Poudre comes out of the mountains clean and soft, which is the reason Anheuser-Busch built its brewery on the north edge of town in the 1980s, and the reason the small brewers that followed — Odell in 1989, New Belgium in 1991 — could do what they did. Fort Collins now has one of the highest concentrations of breweries per capita in the country.
It is also why so much of our weekend work here is groups. Designated-driver duty for six people in a coach van costs less than the alternative and removes the argument about who is driving home. We quote it by the hour with a two-hour minimum.

It is the cheapest option on this corridor and the slowest, and you handle your own luggage through the transfer.
