The Drive
A short run that still crosses real mountain country
It is I-70 east from the airport at Gypsum through Eagle, Edwards and Avon, about 36 miles to Vail Village. In clear conditions it is a genuinely easy half hour and change, which is exactly why the resort traffic exists.
It is not, however, a flat road. You climb about 2,000 feet along the way, the canyon between Wolcott and Edwards ices in the shade, and the same storms that shut the interstate over Vail Pass hit this stretch first from the west.
How much time to add. Clear conditions, 35 to 45 minutes. Saturday afternoon in peak season with every arrival landing at once, add twenty. Active storm, add thirty and expect a traction law.
The airport is the variable, not the road. EGE has a single 9,000-foot runway at 6,548 feet, and density altitude, wind and visibility all bite here. Diversions to Grand Junction or Denver happen. We track the tail number, not the schedule, and if you land somewhere else we will tell you what the drive from there looks like before you ask.
Vail is 36 road miles west of Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) on I-70, about a 35-minute drive with no mountain passes in between. Arion meets EGE arrivals inside the terminal on Level 1 with a digital name sign, tracks the flight, and runs the transfer in 4WD vehicles on winter tires. Vail is our single most common EGE destination — 45.9% of the Eagle County airport transfers in our record end there.
What happens when you land at EGE
At Eagle County the meet is inside the terminal, on Level 1, in the lobby’s marked “Drivers Waiting Area”, before baggage claim and a short walk from Ground Transportation. Your chauffeur is standing there holding a digital name sign — white type on black with the gold winged A — takes the bags, and walks you to the vehicle. There is no charge for that at EGE. It is how every EGE arrival is handled.
The flight is tracked. Pickup is set for 30 minutes after your scheduled landing time, the chauffeur texts you the moment the aircraft is on the ground, and the vehicle is not released until dispatch has exhausted every way of reaching you — one hour after landing with no contact is the only release trigger. If the flight is cancelled outright we issue a credit for the value of the ride and rebook off your new flight information.
EGE is a small terminal, which cuts both ways. Bags come out fast, and the walk from gate to curb is a few minutes. But when three ski-season flights land inside twenty minutes of each other, one baggage belt has to absorb four hundred people and six hundred ski bags. Our record says the median EGE arrival is in the car about 30 minutes after the flight-linked pickup time, and the average is 39 minutes — the gap between those two numbers is the ski bags.
How long it really takes to get from the gate to the car
We keep this number because guessing at it is how people end up standing in a terminal wondering whether they have been forgotten. Across 233 Eagle County airport transfers in our reservation record:
Read the bottom row first: at Eagle County there is no summer baseline to compare against, because 97% of the airport work is winter. Winter is the baseline here. That is why we do not quote you a cheerful twenty minutes — one EGE arrival in five takes over an hour to clear, and pretending otherwise just moves the disappointment.
None of that is a meter running. Wait time after a flight is included; the chauffeur is there and stays there.

Where Vail Valley arrivals actually go
Eagle County is a valley airport with a narrow destination set. The Vail Valley — Vail, Beaver Creek, Avon and Edwards together — accounts for 92.7% of every EGE transfer we have run.
If your destination is not on that list, it is usually Aspen, Snowmass or Breckenridge, and those are longer drives with different math. Aspen from EGE is covered on our EGE to Aspen page.
Vehicles, ski bags and what actually fits
Rates are hourly and base rates before tax, fees and gratuity, with the first 40 miles of each booking included. Luxury Sedan $150/hr (3 passengers, 2-hour minimum), Executive SUV $125/hr (5), Luxury SUV $150/hr, Luxury Coach Van $250/hr (12, 3 hr minimum), Executive/Jet Van $325/hr (9) on a 4-hour minimum. Stretch limousines, party buses and coach buses are quote only. Seasonal rule: from November 1 through April 30 the Luxury SUV is booked at 5 passengers rather than 6, because gear and luggage need the sixth seat. The rate is locked when you book; a storm or a full flight does not change it.
Ski and snowboard bags are the whole problem with a Vail Valley transfer, and they are the thing people underestimate. A hard ski case is close to six feet long. In practice a Luxury SUV takes four skiers with skis, boots and a suitcase each; past that, ask for a van. Vans swallow up to eighteen suitcases, oversized items ride on the roof, and nobody should be holding a bag on their lap over Dowd Junction. Tell us the gear count when you book, not at the curb.
A group of six with full ski setups is a van booking, not an SUV booking, and the difference is worth having on the phone before the flight rather than at Level 1. Our vehicle selection guide walks through the sizes.
Car seats are $25 per seat and boosters $15, both requested at booking so they are in the vehicle before the chauffeur leaves for the airport. We do not have wheelchair lifts or ramps; folding chairs and walkers travel fine in the cargo area.
Who is driving
Vail Valley work runs on Arion's own vehicles and on Arion-trained 1099 affiliate chauffeurs and vetted Colorado PUC-certified operators, depending on the date and the vehicle. Every one of them carries a PUC permit and commercial insurance, and every one of them is dispatched, tracked and answered for by Arion. You call one number either way.
Arion, LLC operates under Colorado PUC permit LL-04689 with commercial auto and general liability insurance on every trip. Chauffeurs on Vail Valley work drive this corridor in winter as a matter of routine, which is a different qualification from holding a license.
Cancellation terms on standard bookings: full refund at 48 hours or more, up to 50% inside 48 hours, nothing inside 24. Tours run on a 7-day window.
The Destination, By The People Who Drive It
Two villages, one mountain, and a valley that runs on the shuttle nobody wants to wait for
Vail opened in December 1962 with one gondola, two chairlifts and five-dollar lift tickets, on a mountain the founders had skinned up during their Tenth Mountain Division years at Camp Hale, twenty miles south. It is now 5,317 acres, the biggest single ski mountain in Colorado, with a village at 8,150 feet built to look like it has been there for centuries. It has not.
The original core: covered bridge, pedestrian streets, and the Gondola One base. Vehicle access is restricted, so drop points matter.
The second base a mile west, more modern, with the Eagle Bahn gondola and easier vehicle access.
Where a lot of the good rentals are, and where a shuttle wait in ski boots gets old fast.
Ten miles west at Avon, gated, and a different mountain with a different personality.

If we got one run, it would be Gitalong Road — with Riva Ridge for whoever wants it
Gitalong Road was open on Vail's first day, December 15, 1962. It follows part of an old livestock driveway and carries the name Earl Eaton gave it, the rancher who spotted this mountain's potential before there was a lift on it. Close to four miles from Mid-Vail to the village, gentle the whole way, which is what makes it work for a group that does not all ski the same.
The strong skier splits off onto Riva Ridge — the same four miles with three thousand feet of drop, named by 10th Mountain veterans for the ridge their division scaled in Italy in February 1945 — and both lines finish at the same tables in Vail Village. That is the version of a family ski day that actually ends well: one run, two difficulties, one hot chocolate at the bottom.

The weather, told straight
The valley averages around 350 inches on the mountain and considerably less in the village at 8,150 feet. Storms arrive from the west, which means this end of the valley often gets hit before Vail Pass closes, and the airport at Gypsum can be clear while the village is in a whiteout twenty minutes away.
The one rule that matters for a traveller: never assume the road is doing what the sky above your hotel is doing. Our dispatch reads the CDOT cameras along the whole corridor before a car goes out.
Camp Hale is why Vail exists
The Army built Camp Hale in the Pando Valley at 9,200 feet in 1942 to train the Tenth Mountain Division in mountain and winter warfare. Thousands of soldiers learned to ski and climb there, and after the war a number of them came back to Colorado to build ski areas, Vail among them.
Camp Hale was designated a National Monument in October 2022. It is a twenty-five minute drive from the village over Tennessee Pass in summer, and it is the most direct explanation of why this valley looks the way it does.

How far is Vail from Eagle County Airport?
Thirty-six road miles on I-70, about a 35-minute drive. There are no mountain passes on the route. EGE sits at 6,480 feet and Vail Village at 8,180 feet.
How long is the drive from EGE to Vail in winter?
Usually still about 35 minutes. Storms and the Dowd Junction stretch just west of Vail can stretch it to an hour or close the road entirely. We build a buffer into winter mountain departures rather than the arrivals, because arrivals we simply wait for.
Where does my driver meet me at Eagle County Airport?
Inside the terminal on Level 1, in the lobby’s marked “Drivers Waiting Area”, before baggage claim. Your chauffeur holds a digital name sign with the Arion logo and helps with bags. There is no extra charge for the inside meet at EGE.
Is there a fee for meet and greet at EGE?
No. Inside meet-and-greet is standard at Eagle County and at Aspen. The $75 inside meet fee applies only at Denver International, where curbside on Level 5 is the default.
How much is a car from EGE to Vail?

What happens if my flight into EGE is delayed?
Nothing you have to manage. The flight is tracked, pickup moves with the arrival, and wait time is included. The chauffeur texts you when the aircraft is on the ground.
What if my flight to Eagle County is diverted or cancelled?
If you divert to Denver we can meet you at DEN instead and drive you up — tell us and we will rebook it as a Denver pickup. If the flight is cancelled outright we issue a credit for the value of the ride and rebook off your new flight. We never cancel your ride on our own initiative.
Do you have 4WD and winter tires?
Yes. State-approved winter tires and four-wheel drive, which satisfies Colorado's Traction Law without chains. Two-wheel-drive vans and buses carry the traction devices the state requires.
Which Vail exit should I give you?
Give us the lodge or address rather than the exit. Exit 173 is West Vail, Exit 176 is Vail Village and the Transportation Center, Exit 180 is East Vail. They are several minutes apart in traffic.
Can I book a round trip back to EGE?
Yes, and most people do. For a winter departure from Vail we set the pickup working backwards from your flight with two extra hours of buffer, not fifteen minutes. The chauffeur stages 15 minutes early.
How far ahead should I book an EGE transfer?
For a ski-season Saturday, as early as you have the flight. Peak Saturdays in the Vail Valley sell out of vehicles, not of drivers. Standard minimum notice is six hours; inside two hours it is a rush booking with a $50 fee and we confirm only once a chauffeur is secured.
